Hanging Lake and Waterfall - Near Glenwood Springs, Colorado
Dead Horse Creek is a great creek that starts above Spouting Rock,
travels the lenght of this finger of Glenwood Canyon, and spills into the
Colorado River.
There are several bridges that cross over Dead Horse Creek on the way
up the trail to Hanging Lake.
Hanging Lake is one of the rewards at the end of the 1.2 mile hike.
Beautiful clear green water, and some fishies to boot.
At one time, Hanging Lake was part of a much larger lake. A fault gave
way and the rest of the lake fell to the bottom of the canyon, leaving us this
green pool at the top of a cliff face.
Just a few more minutes beyond Hanging Lake is Spouting Rock. There
are holes in the cliff face out of which water shoots. This time of year, the
stream that feeds the water into the holes, has som much water forcing itself
down stream that it shoots out over the top of the cliff creating a great-and
very noisy waterfall.
A great view of Glenwood Canyon from just a few yards below Spouting Rock.
